100 First Words Chart
How to Use the 100 First Words Chart by 100 Foods Baby: A Quick Guide for Grown-Ups
The 100 First Words Chart is designed to support your baby's early speech and language journey in a simple, engaging way. It includes 100 everyday words commonly learned in the toddler years, each with three tick boxes to help you track your child’s progress:
Understands the word – Tick when your baby shows they understand the word (e.g., looking at a ball when you say “ball”).
Says the word – Tick when they attempt to say the word, even if it’s not clear yet (e.g., “ba” for “ball”).
Clearly pronounces the word – Tick when they can confidently and clearly say the word.
How to Use It:
Display it where you’ll see it often – Put the chart on the fridge, playroom wall, or inside a folder you keep handy.
Make it part of your daily routine – Chat through words during play, mealtime, nappy changes, and storytime.
Celebrate progress – Every tick is a milestone! Praise your child’s effort and enjoy the journey together.
Tips to Encourage Speech Development:
Talk constantly – Narrate your day, label objects, and describe what you’re doing. Babies learn through hearing.
Read together daily – Picture books build vocabulary and introduce rhythm and sound patterns.
Sing nursery rhymes – Repetition and melody help with memory and pronunciation.
Get face-to-face – Make eye contact and let them watch how your mouth moves.
Pause and wait – Give your child time to respond or copy sounds. Even babble is progress!
Repeat and expand – If your child says “car,” you can say “Yes, a red car!” to model the next level of language.
Follow their lead – Talk about what they’re interested in, whether it's a dog, a spoon, or their favourite toy.
Speech development varies greatly from child to child, so don’t worry if progress feels slow. The chart is there to help you notice all the amazing little steps along the way. Most importantly, have fun with it—your child learns best when they’re feeling connected and supported.
